Are UBC adjunct professors eligible to lead?
No, teams may include non-faculty researchers, but the team must be co-led by a UBC faculty member and an eligible UCLA researcher.
Can researchers participate in more than one application?
Researchers can participate as team members in more than one application but can only be a lead on one application.
The program guidelines state that priority will be given to teams that involve faculty in the social sciences, humanities, and/or creative and performing arts. My collaboration does not include faculty from those divisions. Should I still apply?
While there is a preference for certain disciplines, all collaborations will be considered for funding through this mechanism. The overall goal of the program is to foster collaboration between the campuses, so a strong application will make the case that what you are proposing could lead to potential additional funding, joint outputs, and enhanced collaborative thinking.
Do I need to follow a specific format when submitting the budget?
Yes. All teams must use the CRMA UBC-UCLA Budget Template.
Can funds be used for faculty salaries/stipends or direct research costs?
No, funds cannot be used for faculty salaries, stipends or direct research costs. This mechanism is for building a collaboration that will lead to research or a research output, not for the research itself.
Can student researchers or staff be hired/supported by the funds?
Yes. Student researchers or staff may be hired or supported by the funds but applications should explain how they will facilitate the activities of the proposed collaboration.
Can funds be used to support collaborators from outside UBC or UCLA?
Yes. Teams are permitted to seek funding to support collaborators from outside of UBC and UCLA provided that applicants clearly articulate the value brought to the collaboration by the inclusion of the external collaborators.
Can this funding mechanism be used to support joint educational activities such as courses or curricular development?
No, this funding mechanism may not be used to support joint educational activities; the focus of this mechanism is on fostering collaborative research opportunities.
Do the budgets have to be split 50/50 between UBC and UCLA?
No, the budget does not need to be split 50/50 between the campuses but there is an expectation that the budget will be shared equitably between the two institutions.
I am having technical difficulties completing the budget form. Do you have any tips?
The budget form needs to be opened with Adobe software (Reader or Pro) in order to be filled out correctly. When opened with Adobe software, all the dropdown menus (for the "Expense Category" and "Expense Item" fields) should populate, and the totals in the "Total Funding Requested" section should calculate automatically. Please note that, in order for the dropdown menus in the "Expense Item" category to populate, you must have first chosen something from the "Expense Category" dropdown.
If you continue to encounter difficulties with the budget form, please note that in the narrative box at the bottom and include any information there that would not populate in the other fields.
How do we submit an application and do we need to submit our application to both campuses?
All applications for funding must be submitted for funding through the application portal at: https://app.wizehive.com/appform/login/UCLAUBC2020. There is a single application process so you need submit only thrrough the portal.
I have run into some trouble with the application portal. Who do I contact for help?
Please contact ovcr@conet.ucla.edu for help if you have trouble with the application portal.
